Tim Duncan was recently given the cover of Sports Illustrated and rightfully. He has a consistent factor in the San Antonio Spurs success over the last decade. The”Big Fundamental” as he is lovingly called in San Antonio has a very simple game that blends well with the other scoring powers of the Spurs.

Here in the San Antonio basketball community you get alot of what I call “Kobe Haters”. Everybody has thier own opinion but I find it hard to hate the guy who commits to excelling his career and has an unmatched work ethic.

Awhile back I saw Ganon Baker introduce this drill and he called it the “Kobe Drill”. So to give credit where credit is due, I got this drill from Ganon who gave it the title.

More Spartan notes and thoughts from lesson learned through the day.

Definitely some interesting things that happened today. As last time this is going to be bullet point and spit quickly.

-Sometime you just have to buckle down and do the things you don’t want to do. Especially when it helps you get to where you want to go. No on is exempt from this.

-One of the best things coaches can do for thier players is make them do something they have never done before. Especially in the off season. Players get real comfortable in routines and comfort zones. This all about growth…again, especially in the off season. They will resist at times but be persistant and you can sometimes see th growth right then and there.

-Focus is a lost art theses but still one of the most valuable skills anyone can have.

-It’s amazing the priority one will put on things when they’re back is against the wall. I can see it being ok to be in those positions at times because of how well we sometimes perform. But when it’s not always neccessary plays a different role.

–Getting players to love the game and want to be on the court getting better at it is a valuable asset to a coach. It takes work to get players to that point. I guarantee it will never ccome instantly and without you first investing in them and getting to know them. From there you have to help them shape thier desires to include success in the game.

First edition of Spartan Notes

For awhile now I have heard people talk about the importance of putting down ideas everyday and things that were learned. However, I like to pass on everything I learn to those I lead and train. Hence the reason for this new series of “Spartan Notes”. I will be quick bullet point style ideas and lessons learned from the day and through out the training conducted for the day.

-One of the best things any administration can do is to put coaches in a position where they are able to focus only on coaching. You limit a coaches effectiveness when they have to balance other tasks as well. However, all coaches must understand that depending on the program they should expect to have more responsiblity than just coaching.

-Any age can be taught basketball or any skill for that matter. But the critical component is getting that player(s) to want to try it and understand what you want them to accomplish. Sometimes this means getting to do something without realizing what you are actually try to get them to accomplish.

-A coach is only as good as they are able to innovate and improvise in long term perspective and immediately.

-Timing is an interesting thing. We always want it to comply to our mission. But it rarely does. And when we start to focus on it’s non compliance we get distracted from the mission. But if we just stay focused on the mission 100% we end up finding ourselves in the right place and the right time in the long run.
